ESTABLISHMENT AND CONSOLIDATION OF THE SUPERIOR MEDICAL EDUCATION SCHOOL IN IAȘI. ROLE OF THE SOCIETY OF PHYSICIANS AND NATURALISTS OF IAȘI
Abstract
1830-1833: The Society of Physicians and Naturalists of Iași, a ferment of
Moldavian medical education. Designed on January 11th, 1830, in the form of a Medical Reading Circle within the Spiridonia Hospital, and having the representatives of the Doctoral Council in the capital of Moldavia among its first members, the Society of Physicians and Naturalists of Iasi (SMN) was fully recognized on March 18th, 1833. Its founders were doctors Iacob Cihac, the city's chief obstetrician, with a doctorate at Heidelberg, and Moldavia’s protomedicus, Mihail Zotta, with a doctorate in Vienna, the first Romanian licensed physician in Bucovina. As an association of academic type, SMN was the first scientific society in the Romanian Lands, and in South-East Europe as well. It gathered not only doctors and pharmacists from all over the Principality, but the intellectual, political and religious elite of the country, of neighboring regions inhabited by Romanians, along with many outstanding scholars from different European countries. Almost all the founders of the Iasi medical school were SMN members and/or leaders, benefiting from what that Little Academy had founded in national première: the Library (1830), the Museum (1834), the Botanical Garden (1856), all of public use. Against the background of emulation that the introduction of the Organic Law (1832) and the 1848 Revolution in Moldavia aroused, things finally started moving in this forgotten corner of the world, also due to the particularly rich scientific and cultural life SMN generated. Concurrently, this context facilitated the founding of the Michaelian Academy (1835), the University (1860) and finally, the Faculty of Medicine (1879). Iacob Cihac, the author, in 1837, of the first treatise on natural history published in Romanian at the Albina Institute in Iasi, delivered a Natural History course at the Michaelian Academy. Dreaming of a Faculty of Medicine, in his speech at the Congress of the Naturalists in Freiburg in 1838, he already talked about the ‟the hope of opening a course of surgery in Iasi”. His initiative was going to become true only after the ‟By-laws for the reorganization of public education..” were enacted in 1851, and especially after the 1859 Union (1).
