Abstract

Cirrhosis is the end stage of chronic liver diseases, associated with high mortality, and responsible for about 170,000 deaths yearly in Europe alone as reported by the World Health Organization (1), as well as the second cause of death associated with digestive diseases, after colorectal cancer (2). It is well known that cirrhotic patients are particularly prone to the development of malnutrition which has been shown to be an independent predictor of survival in these patients (3), mortality increasing in direct proportion to the severity of malnutrition, reaching almost 80% in those with sarcopenia and frailty (4, 5). Consequently, all patients with cirrhosis should be screened for malnutrition in order to diagnose this complication and its degree of severity.
