THE PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF THE NEUTROPHIL-TO-LYMPHOCYTE RATIO IN PATIENTS WITH ADVANCED NON-SMALL-CELL LUNG CANCER AND PULMONARY COMORBIDITIES

Abstract

Aim: This study assesses the prognostic role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and other clinical parameters in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who also suffer from pulmonary comorbidities. Material and methods: This single-center retrospective research was conducted during January 2015 – December 2018 on patients with the above-mentioned diagnosis. The statistical analysis was carried out with SPSS version 25.0 and focused on evaluating the independent effects of NLR and other parameters by means of univariate and  multivariate Cox regression analyses. Results: Regarding progression-free survival (PFS), the results of the multivariate analysis did not indicate NLR as a prognostic factor (HR: 1.34; 95% CI: 0.85-2.11; p=0.2), unlike the ECOG performance status (HR: 1.71; 95% CI: 1.06-2.77; p=0,02). In terms of overall survival (OS), NLR was an independent negative prognostic factor (HR: 1.8; 95% CI: 1.21-2.69; p=0.004), and so was smoking (HR 1.97; 95% CI: 1.23-3.15; p=0.005). Conclusions: While we did not find NLR to be an independent prognostic factor for PFS in patients with NSCLC and pulmonary comorbidities, it proved to be a negative prognostic factor for OS in these cases.
