BODY COMPOSITION AND METABOLIC PARAMETERS COMPARISON IN YOUNG WOMEN WITH ANOREXIA NERVOSA AND CONSTITUTIONAL THINNESS
Abstract
Anorexia nervosa and constitutional thinness are two separate medical entities resembling in terms of age and body weight. Even though the former is defined by unique psychological traits, its diagnosis is based solely on clinical judgment, which can sometimes lead to confusion in terms of diagnosis accuracy and clinical management. Aim: The aim of this study is to search for discriminative metabolic and body composition traits for each of the aforementioned pathologies. Material and methods: In this transversal study we compared two cohorts of female patients aged 11 to 37 years: 11 subjects with on-going anorexia nervosa restrictive type and 12 subjects with constitutional thinness, respectively. The evaluation was comprised of clinical, biochemical and hormonal assessment, as well as of body composition measurements during total body-scan on dual X-ray absorptiometry. Results: In anorexia nervosa group versus constitutional thinness, there is a tendency towards lower values of TSH, fT4, IGF1 and insulin (1.6±0.8 vs. 2.2±0.8, p<0.05, 0.94±0.1 vs. 1.07±0.1, p<0.05, 105±11 vs. 217±59, p<0.05 and 3.8±2.2 vs. 15.5±1.4, p<0.05, respectively), as well as for total fat percentage (22.8±4 vs. 26.7±4.6, p<0.05). Conclusions: Patients with anorexia nervosa differ from subjects with constitutional thinness not only from psychiatric perspective, but also with regard to several metabolic and body composition parameters.
