Abstract

Syphilis is the main venereal disease globally and one of the main problems of modern medicine, although its incidence is continuously declining. Aim: to gather data regarding the incidence of syphilis over the last 5-6 years in North-eastern Romania. Material and methods: Retrospective study on the main forms of syphilis (primary syphilis, secondary syphilis, latent syphilis, congenital syphilis, neurosyphilis) which included a total of 304 patients admitted and treated to the Clinic of Dermatovenerology of the Iasi County “Sf. Spiridon” Emergency Hospital between 2013-2018. Results: The incidence of the different clinical forms of syphilis  was as follows: primary syphilis 1%, secondary syphilis 16%, recent latent syphilis 37%, late latent syphilis 22%, early congenital syphilis 3%, late congenital syphilis 11%, results on agreement with literature data. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a linear decrease in the incidence of syphilis over the last 5-6 years in Northeastern Romania, but it still ranks first among EU countries. Further research is needed to understand the social determinants that lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases in Romania.
