EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BURNS IN IAȘI COUNTY, A 10-YEARS STUDY

Abstract

This study intends to obtain a baseline epidemiological evaluation regarding hospitalizations for burns cases in Iași County. Material and methods: We performed an epidemiological descriptive study of all hospital admitted burns patients from Iași County, for a period of 10 years, from 2006 to 2015. Data used in this study originates from standard government collected information upon hospital discharge and freely available public demographic information. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: There were a total of 3,065 residents of Iași County hospitalized for burn-related causes in the studied period. Monthly distribution showed an average of 25.5 cases, with peaks in December (30.3 cases/month) and July (29.1 cases/month). Males represented 56% of cases and Male to female Ratio period was 1.27:1. The urban/rural proportion averaged 1:1.55. Average length of stay had a mean value of 9.79 days, while average median length of stay was 7.5 days. A total of 106 deaths were reported. Mortality expressed as deaths-to-cases ratio resulted in 3.54% for the overall period. Conclusions: This is the first study upon the epidemiology of burns in Romania in the last 30 years. The studied group presents a strong rural predominance with an increasing trend, and a decrease of annual case numbers combined with an increase in burn-related deaths. Quality of collected data is critical towards a precise overview and specific indicators are needed in reporting burns.
