Aim of study was to compare the clinical postoperative evolution in the treatment of gingival hyperplasia by using diode laser and scalpel surgery. Materials and methods: A total of 40 patients with gingival hyperplasia, selected from the Clinical Learning Base of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi, were included in study. Participants were divided in test group (laser-assisted surgery, n = 20) and control group (scalpel surgery, n = 20). The laser surgery was performed with Epic (BioLase) (940 nm). Postoperative evolution was assessed at 24 hours, 3 days, and 7 days. The postoperative evolution was assessed by the progression of the postoperative pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale) and healing time (days). Results: For gingivectomy performed with diode laser, mean VAS scores decreased from 2.60 ± 0.38 days at 24 h to 0.21 ± 0.22 at 7 days (p < 0.001) versus 5.20 ± 0.77 days (at 24 h) to 1.20 ± 0.64 (7 days) in the scalpel group (p < 0.001). Mean healing times were significantly shorter after laser therapy (3.20 ± 0.77 days) compared to scalpel surgery (8.40 ± 2.09). Conclusions: Laser-assisted surgery lead to faster healing time and accelerates the decrease of postoperative pain intensity during first 7 days posttreatment, compared to traditional surgical approach.
